A monk was caught stealing at a temple run by Bankei who ignored it. When the culprit had been caught a third time the body of monks insisted he be expelled or they would all leave. Bankei gathered the monks before him and declared they were all good and true, knowing right from wrong. "But", he asked, "this poor fellow seems to have no idea and who will teach him if he is abandoned?" At that moment the thief was enlightened.
