Japanese Stone Sulpture by Susumu Ikegami
Beautiful
Woman Looking Back Over Her Shoulder
This
was an attempt to harmonize modern sculpture with the sort of traditional
street scene that has now become increasingly rare in Japan. Interestingly,
the white walls and lattice doors make a compelling background for an
objet that is reminiscent of a woman just slightly rolling her
hips in passing. A sensor inside the sculpture causes it to light up when
cars or pedestrians pass, drawing further attention to it after dusk.
As a "streetcorner sculpture", the work has become a focal point
in the town, offering both residents and visitors a friendly and familiar
contact with art.
