Japanese Stone Sulpture by Susumu Ikegami
"Bardo"
Gate
In
the "Tibetan Book of the Dead," the word "bardo" is
used to denote the intermediary or "in-between" state of souls
choosing between the temptations of another round of transmigration into
the world and eternal liberation. The above work is intended as a sort
of ennabling device for abetting this process. The loop of stones represent
living energy, and the intervals the connecting spaces between this world
and the next. The cracks and crevices in the stones suggest the departure
of life. The eastern and western stones are, respectively, intended as
a place for those still living and those who have departed the flesh to
linger for a moment and take their final leave of one another.
