Utamaro - Japanese Woodblock Print Artist

    -Utamaro-

    English Definition:
Kitagawa Utamaro (1753-1806)-One of the most creative and influential artists in the history of ukiyo-e, Japanese woodblock printing.

Utamaro is famed for his depictions of beautiful women from Edo's (Tokyo's) pleasure quarters, teahouses and shops. Usually, Utamaro focused on the idealized Japanese woman as shown by his taste for semi-nude portraits called "okubi-e." Some of Utamaro's most famous works include "Ehon Mushi Erami" ("Insect Book") and "Kyogetsubo" ("Moon-mad Monk.")

Note: Utamaro relates to the craft, Ukiyo-e, Japanese wood block printing.
