Tategu - Japanese furniture fittings for a house

-Tategu-

English Definition:
Furntiture fittings of a house

Tategu, the fittings of house, include interior as well as exterior sliding doors and windows such as "fusuma" (interior sliding doors, separating rooms from other rooms and hallways); "shoji" (interior and exterior doors and windows, separating rooms, hallways, gardens, courtyards, etc.); and "genkan" (external front doors). Also included in the tategu family are freestanding and ensconced panels, including shoji screens and "ranma" panels (ensconced overhead).

Japanese doors tend to slide horizontally between a wooden upper ("kamoi") and a lower track ("shikii") as opposed to Western-style doors, which are often hinged.

Note: See the craft of Tategu.
