    Glossary Term
Noren - Japanese Split Entryway Curtain

    English Definition:
Split curtain used in place of doors as entrances to Japanese shops, and as doorways and decorations inside Japanese homes

Noren in the past were typically dyed navy blue with the shopkeepers insignia in white. They fell out of use during the early part of the 20th century, but many Japanese-style restaurants still hang them in their entrances. They are still common in homes as well.

Note: "Noren" relates to the craft, Somemono, the process of dyeing textiles such as silk and cotton with natural dyes such as indigo.
